I can only imagine how my younger self would’ve made fun of my current self.

• Young Jonny (same height): Wait, you’re telling me you journal everyday?”

• Current Jonny: Yes, it’s how I talk to myself.. it gives me clarity…”

• Young Jonny: Dude, you’re embarrassing me. What else? Yoga and Lactose free yogurt for breakfast?

• Current Jonny: Ummm, I gotta go - Mom’s calling.

If you were to tell me this would be my life, I would’ve laughed in your face and told you to re-shuffle the Tarot card deck -Vanessa.

I’ve had a lot of work experiences, some great, some bad and a lot of “meh”. If there’s one thing that I have trouble with is the notion that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be in life.

But - if i’m not, then where am I supposed to be?

…and yes, i’m thinking what you’re thinking too.

If we’re all in the right place at the right time, then why is it every time JB Fletcher travels, goes on a book signing tour or simply provides miracles with her presence and wit, does someone get murdered?

But you could also look at it that - she’s in the right place at the right time. Those murders might not have been solved had she NOT been there.

The Artists Way

About 4 years ago I sold my shares in a business I worked my ass off for. Blood, sweat and tears. I never thought for a second that I wouldn’t be in that business. I had no vision past it. I had no exit plan. I thought - this is my life, this is who I am.

Until it wasn’t.

I felt lost, frustrated and stuck.

Part of me wanted to go back in the market, launch a rival, and storm the gates. I knew it in and out. But, my heart wasn’t in it. The thought of starting another company, making products, warehousing, shipping… no bueno.

I was lost.

I started going down a self-discovery journey, mixed with episodes of Tiger King.

My therapist suggested a book called the Artist Way. For those who haven’t been gently peer-pressured into it yet, The Artist’s Way is a workbook that drags your inner creative out of hiding—and maybe into the arts & crafts section of Dollarama. It’s a 12-week journey of self-discovery with two main tools:

Morning Pages: You write 3 pages, longhand, every morning. No edits. No thinking. Just brain goo on paper. It’s like sweeping your mind’s front porch before anyone else wakes up.

Artist Dates: You take your inner artist on a weekly solo date. No phones. No friends. Just you and your weird little curiosities—like a museum, an art shop, or a long silent walk where you finally remember what boredom feels like.

Four years later, I’m still writing every morning—and honestly, it changed my life. Still does.

I’m here. I’m writing this newsletter. I feel connected.

I can honestly say, in my previous business - I felt very disconnected even though on the surface it was cool. I started it (with partners) from nothing, by the time I left we were all across the country and in all the major retailers. I constantly pushed my own boundaries.

But rarely did I feel connected. Rarely did I feel free to be myself.

I launched 2 businesses recently: Creative Kickstart and Working Creative.

Both are apart of me. Both I feel connected to. Both would never have happened if I didn’t (uncomfortably) leave my business, go on a path of self-discovery, and read/take action with the Artist Way.

You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be right now.

It’s been almost 4 months since my last post (I sound like I’m in a confessional booth at Church). The last newsletter was the second one from my “2025 Newsletter Reboot”. I called it Easily Distracted. Guess what? I got easily distracted. Quelle surprise!

Somethings are not meant to be.

Holy shit that was disgusting!

A lot has happened since then, but also it feels like very little has happened since then.

Two days ago (May 21st), I finished the website for Creative Kickstart, the program I built and have been using to help people get Unstuck.

I didn’t need to wait until the site was finished to start promoting Creative Kickstart. In fact, I usually discourage that. But this time, launching it this way just felt right.

I’m proud of it. I’m excited to share it.

The more I worked on the website, the more clarity I gained—about the offer, the process, and the people it’s meant to help. Building the site didn’t just showcase the program—it helped me understand it better.

It was hard work. But worth it.

This is a program I truly believe in.
It deserved the care and intention I put into it.

And with every client I work with, I feel more confident that it can help.
Help them feel aligned. Help them find their next chapter. Help them start.

Before Creative Kickstart launched, I quietly kicked off another project with my longtime collaborator and creative partner-in-crime, Martin Gomez — someone I’ve always leaned on professionally.

Martin has shaped nearly every brand I’ve built or worked with. (He designed the Creative Kickstart logo and even named my last business.) He’s my Creative Advisor. My Creative Rabbi. Honestly, he’s someone I’ve always felt lucky — maybe even undeserving — to work with.

Together, we created a new program: Working Creative. It’s built to help creatives turn their creative work into paid work.

I’m very excited about it. I can already picture a growing community of creative professionals who feel like they’re part of something real — something that supports them, improves their business, and makes the work feel more worth it.

Once both projects—Creative Kickstart and Working Creative—launched, I felt this huge wave of release… followed by a weird dip. Like, everything I imagined would happen once I launched is now here: the ideas, the plans, the content…

I wish I could say it felt amazing. But it’s more like I just climbed the first leg of a very big mountain. I get to sit down for a second, maybe sip some water—except I’m not even thirsty, I hate water, and I probably need to save it for later because I have no idea how much further until the next break.

Side note: I wish Coca-Cola was healthy and hydrating like water.

But this—this—is what it’s about: the climb, the process, the struggle.
That’s the part we actually have control over.

We fantasize about results. We tell ourselves: “If I just launch, then I’ll feel _____.”
But it never works that way. “There” is always shifting.
The only thing that really matters is how we move here—day to day, step by step.

And there’s only one way to do it: Your Way.

I’m here.

• Writing my first newsletter in four months.

• I’ve launched two meaningful projects.

• And now, I’m standing at the beginning of a new chapter—one that feels exciting, uncomfortable, and real.

Starting something new is hard as hell.
But not starting? That’s harder.

It’s even harder to go through life feeling disconnected from what you do for a living. Take it from me.

Both paths are hard—only one leads somewhere worth going.

I had a problem I needed to solve: I was stuck.

…and the only way out was to dig in.

I started feeling like a detective… or rather—a universally adored Murder Mystery Writer.

I felt like I was back in University, researching and feverishly writing essays fuelled by Ritalin and Coca Cola, except this time around it was Dextroamphetamine and Coke Zero.

Before I knew it, I had a 35-page magnum opus about unlocking creativity.

Ideas were spilling out faster than my tears during the Murder, She Wrote finale: Death By Demographics.

I still can't believe it's over. Felt so sudden.

I knew what I was writing was special.

It was that feeling that whenTHIS hits the world, the world will NEVER be the same. I get THAT often, but this time it felt about 5% bigger than usual.

Forget Meta, Tesla, or OPENAI—An idea emerged from the writing, that if it was anything BUT Silicon Valley's next Unicorn, I would give up everything and join the Firemen up the street--They keep asking.

But at this point, my only stress was choosing what to wear for my upcoming TED Talk.

Drumroll…

So...I had the BRAND.

Elon, who?

All kidding aside.

I did end up with, what I felt, was a killer program to help people get UNSTUCK, called Creative Kickstart.

I could see the journey unlocking insights for clients, as well as myself.

It was solid.

But here’s the thing: even with a killer logo (shoutout to my eternal Creative Director, Gomez), something was off.

I conducted a number of 1-on-1’s over the course of the fall and it was very fulfilling. I could feel the “aha” moments of the clients and knew I was on the right track.

But something wasn’t right.

How do I make this program more accessible? How do I bring people together? Is this the only thing I want to do? What will my life look like for the next year?

My questions had questions.

I found myself stuck again.

I needed to step away for a “hot minute”.

Starting a business—or any project—is HARD. It’s messy, slow, and frustrating.

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to take a step back and regroup. Walking away isn’t failure—it’s part of the creative process.

We ALL get stuck.

What defines us is HOW WE GET UNSTUCK.

The New Year always feels like the right time to turn a new chapter.

New habits. New routines. New Jonny.

The holidays are all about stuffing your face like you're going on a juice cleanse January 1st and catching up on as many Murder She Wrote reruns that you can fit in a week.

Out with the old, in with the Jew.

And let me tell you: 2025 Jonny = UN-RECOGNIZABLE. You could walk right by him and think he’s the guy you might have seen on the cover of some magazine, like GQ or Esquire. Easily, the next Bond.

He was ramping up his GAME: his running game, his push-up game, his “deep work” game. There wasn’t a game in town, he wasn’t gonna UP.

And let me be crystal clear: Jonny was gonna CRUSH IT and not even bother to ‘take names’. ‘Cause when YOU’RE CRUSHING IT, you don’t have TIME to take names.

You with me so far?

He filled out THE BEST ‘Annual Reviews’ & Goal Setting Worksheets’ from all of the top experts on the internet. HOURS of Prep. He watched every Youtube video imaginable on “How to CRUSH the New Year”.

Goals. Anti-Goals. SMART Goals. DUMB Goals. Jonny’s goals had goals.

You think Tony Robbins was gonna have a big year? pffffff

C’mon, man!?

In order to have the YEAR of ACTION → Jonny had to set the stage for success. In ‘Highly Successful’ people talk that’s “creating an optimal environment”. Make it EASY to win. Reduce the friction.

Put your gym shoes by your bed type thing.

One of the last steps for the 2025 POWER SETUP was framing some of his motivational posters and putting his whiteboard up (to track goals).

He buys the frames… parks the car… he’s walking back home…

BAM!

Slips on the ice. But he doesn’t just slip. He lands on the hard tube he was carrying. Probably the hardest tube East of Ottawa and South of Nunavut.

The pain was insane. Even for him.

He could barely walk to his front door, nevertheless make it up a stair. He decided to call a buddy to get a 2nd opinion. They decided to call another buddy to take him to the hospital.

He was in A LOT of pain. He could barely walk.

Finally, after being wheel-chaired to the emergency unit, Jonny was put on a gurney.

Fast forward 8 hours.

The Dr. referred to it as “Lumbar Sprain” (basically torn ligaments in the back) and sent him home with a heavy pain med cocktail that would make him popular “on the streets”.

Did I forget to mention? The pain was insane.

The 2025 Jonny Goldmaker Success Plan:

• The 100+ push-ups a day. Delayed.

• The 7km daily runs. Delayed.

• The new website, sales and business development push. Delayed.

• Everything he planned for and was ready to CRUSH - Delayed.

The “2025 Plan of Action” disappeared faster than the Hawk Tuah girl’s crypto coin.

Now, with all that time to think.. Jonny realized it was a great plan, but was it really for him?

Was it HIS plan?

Having to spend time on his back and “stuck” with a case of Coke Zero, frozen potato latkes and 7 seasons of The Mentalist, he realized he wasn’t creating a “blueprint of success” for Jonny, it was someone else’s blueprint.

Sure, after 36k pushups & 2500 KM’s of running, Jonny would look like an Adonis. Of course! We’re not saying he wouldn’t.

BUT in a year’s time, is that WHO Jonny wanted to be?

Who DOES Jonny want to be? …and what’s been holding him back up until now. Why does he feel like he needs a 360 degree change to be “successful” and ultimately happy?

The accident became an opportunity.

Jonny had time to stop, reflect and most importantly catch up on the 2007 Series The Mentalist (It was great to see flip phones again!).

36k pushups & 2500 KM’s of running - sounds great on the surface - but lacks substance and any deep meaning.

He’s changing the script.

One that’s more Him.

One that gets him Back in the Ring.

One that has him creating new projects, working with new people and finding happiness in the day-day, not the “I’ll be happy when…” mentality.

Starting with this newsletter.

When I wake up in the mornin',

Ah…The ‘90’s.

…bicycling home after school, throwing a pizza pop in the microwave, grabbing a can of soda and watching Saved By the Bell.

Life was good.

Life was DAMN good!

…acne and all.

I loved the characters on the show.

AC was strong and cool.

Zach was a chick magnet.

Kelly was “mega” hot.

Jesse was cute and smart.

Lisa was also cute and smart.

And Screech was the “oddball” that made us all laugh.

I miss that show.

But more so... I miss how that show was a DAILY BREAK.

Not that my world was so “stressful” at the time, but I knew exactly what i’d be doing at 4:30pm everyday and it was the best.

This week I HIT A WALL.

Wednesday → I couldn’t think, couldn’t write, couldn’t progress…

I felt BLOCKED.

I tried…

But nothing.

I had no choice... BUT to take a break.

I bought a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, threw on some old Law & Orders and ‘took it easy’.

We’ll call it a ‘self-care moment’.

Thursday morning —> Guns Blazing.

It was like an archeological dig of productivity and clear thoughts.

When you’re trying TOO HARD to get to the next level, but hit a wall…

Take a Break.

…and then Hawk Tuah it. 😉

It’s “all good”.

You’ll get there.

…’cause I’m saved by the break.

For years I’ve told the people around me “You know a lot, you should be posting and sharing… you can be creating opportunities…”.

But I wasn’t.

Until recently.

I wasn’t sure about what I knew.

I have 20+ years of experience I could share, but why? …and for who?

I don’t want to talk about building a “Tchotchke” business. It’s behind me.

I also don’t want to build a reputation around that.

So what then?

I didn’t know.

I couldn’t “think”.

I needed to TUNE OUT and TUNE IN (to myself).

I made a commitment to shift from CONSUMING to CREATING.

Writing this newsletter every week, gives me clarity - believe or not.

Once I decided to start posting…the challenge(s) became:

• What do I write about?

• Who’s it for?

• How do I standout?

When I turned off all the distractions, got a little bored - I realized - if I could hop in a time machine and write to Jonny 2 weeks ago - that’s who I can talk to.

That’s who I can help.

—> I got back online to see what the TOP Creators were doing.

A LOT of it’s the same, same.

• “If I was 25 again, here’s what I would tell myself”

• “If you want to make money, here’s the 10 things that….”

• “I was shitting in the woods.. and then realized, eCommerce could be much simpler, if….”

🤮

I don’t want to do that.

I don’t want to follow the crowd… even if it takes me longer to build an audience.

I want to be myself.

Or - I don’t want to do it.

It might be a terrible short term strategy - but I don’t give a fuck.

Recently I came across this quote, that really hit home:

“Don’t aim to be the best, be the only.” - Kevin Kelly

My advice for you is the same.

Whether it’s content or prostitution.

You don’t need to be the “best”, be the “only”.

Follow your curiosity.

Own it.

It’s one of the most underrated movies of all time!

One thing I can guarantee when watching this movie: You’ll NEVER know when the Goosebumps are gonna hit.

Holy Shit.

Here’s a Quick Synopsis for those that have never witnessed ART at it’s peak form:

Lincoln Hawke (Sly Stallone) is a truck driver who’s “down-on-his-luck”. He makes extra cash arm wrestling on the side while trying to rebuild his life. He tried to make amends with his son who he left 10 years earlier. On their first meeting his son doesn’t think too highly of him... but after spending time on the road together, the son starts to warm up. Hawke enters the World Arm Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas where he can win a new truck and ultimately a new life for himself.

At one point in the movie, Hawke pushes his son to arm wrestle a kid much bigger than him.

His son loses and throws a “hissy fit”.

It was hard to watch. 🫣

Hawke catches up to him outside, and tells his son… “The world meets nobody halfway. When you want something, you gotta take it.”

His son goes back into the diner, challenges the older kid to a re-match….

And WINS.

It’s the turning point.

Spoiler Alert: Hawke wins the tournament. He wins a new Truck. He wins Loads of Cash (he bet on himself)… and most importantly he gets his son back.

I don’t know who was happier, Hawke, his son or me?

Me. Forsure, me.

Bottom Line: We all have dreams. We all have things we want to achieve. Sometimes we feel like there’s invisible forces working against us.

There are.

It’s ourselves.

We tell ourselves we can’t do it.

If Lincoln Hawke can abandon his son for 10 years, gain his love, while also winning an arm wrestling championship against a Ginormous Monster, named "Bull"… then there’s nothing YOU can’t achieve.

Nothing “great” happens in under a year.

During the year, you’ll pivot.

You’ll see what parts of the “new thing” you like and what you don’t.

Follow your instincts.

#2 Consistency

Weekly Deadlines forced me to write every week.

The process has evolved…

But each week… I felt more confident in my voice.

I realized, I didn’t need to be a “great writer”.

I just needed to sound more like myself.

That took repetition.

#3 Accountability

Knowing each week, this newsletter was going out to Human Beings…

I had “no outs”.

#4 Trust The Process

Whatever process YOU DECIDE.

It doesn’t matter how others do it. Successful or not.

It’s Your Process.

Trust it… and get started.

#5 Have Fun

I’ve enjoyed this…

Sometimes, waking up early on a Friday and HAVING to do this (Yes, I know I could’ve done it before.. but there’s something about reflecting on the week..that only hits on a Friday) is kind of annoying.

But… when the words flow.. and the images start to pop in my head… it’s fun. 🥳

Whether it’s writing or video or sewing…

Find something you enjoy the process of and share it.

You won’t regret it.

You’ll only regret not trying it.

It’s Summer!!

Camp. Road Trips. The Beach.

Yes, I only think in ‘80’s movies.

This past week I fell into a “planning trap”.

I’m committing to posting online consistently for a year.

I have a TON of ideas.

Mostly bad and offensive, but a ton.

My brilliant strategy: Write an essay each week, then break it down into posts, newsletters etc…

It was a great process to get ideas out.

But - I DON’T need more ideas.

I just need to make posts.

And…

The essay was terrible.

The essay smelled worse than the washroom at the Mexican Market I visited a few years ago. 💩

I made it HARDER than it needed to be.

When I dropped the essay, it started to flow…

…and ACTUALLY became fun.

What can YOU make EASIER for yourself?

What’s the most IMPORTANT thing you can do that will have the BIGGEST impact?

Probably not planning about planning…

It’s what I tell everyone around me to do.

Time to practice what I preach.

I’m nervous about it. 😅

I have a lot of “genius” content ideas I want to put out there. 🙄

The pressure to choose how to start is HARD.

To take the pressure off I’m treating the first month (or three) as the “Experimentation Phase”.

That’s it.

It’s an experiment.

It doesn’t need to be “perfect”.

If there’s something you’ve been thinking about starting or launching…

Experiment.

Play with it.

It will evolve….

This Newsletter is an experiment.

This past week I was in Pitch Mode.

I threw all my ideas into a “somewhat” organized Presentation… and started to get feedback.

It started to come to life.

All around - GREAT ADVICE.

I can’t emphasize enough…

If you want to start something:

A Business. A Project. A Knitting Group.

…and if you’re like me:

You have a ton of ideas, but they’re all over the place.

Turn it into a Presentation.

Present it to a “Board of Friends”.

People you trust.

People that can give you Constructive Feedback.

It will give you CLARITY.

It will start to become REAL.

But most importantly: Keep an OPEN MIND.

You NEVER know what ideas or advice will come from it.

In my case → The Best NUGGET of Advice came through this process.

That advice: Start Small.

Start with 1 Service.

Set a Revenue Target for that 1 Service.

Work backwards from there.

You DON’T need an elaborate Website to start.

Utilize the platform your marketing on.

Keep it simple.

Initially - I hated this advice.

I have so MANY “Brilliant” ideas that I’m excited about.

But - It gave me such clarity.

So simple.

It’s so easy to get into the trap of THINKING BIG.. and “oh this idea is gonna be sick!”

…and then not even starting.

It becomes a Mountain.

Start Small.

Let it grow naturally.

Let the market dictate which ideas are good.

But definitely start.

This past week I went HARD in the “trenches”.

I had a Deadline.

I have people to present to.

Everyday → up early → Attacking.

My weapon for the attack - Canva (for those not familiar, it’s a simple design tool for non-designers).

“Cool, Jonny. You use Canva - Mazel Tov! Where you going with this?”

It took me a LONG ASS time to start using it.

Actually… it took writing this newsletter to get me started with it.

I told myself:

“I’m not a designer”

“I don’t have creative technical skills”

“I’m too old to learn this shit!”

…going back to what I said about “working in the trenches”. 👆

It’s more like working in a Sandbox.

It’s FUN! 🥳

When I’m using Canva - Time Flies.

...and it will be a critical tool for my business.

It allows me… to express myself in the way I want to.

It allows me… to be creative.

I’m not a designer.

Nor do I have any ambition to become one.

Mucho Respecto for professional designers. 👏

I just want to be able to communicate MY WAY.

IN MY VOICE.

…and Canva has become my vehicle to do it.

What SKILL have you thought about learning?

In a year from now… it will still be a year from now.

You might… have developed a skill you love.

You might… have found a new sandbox to play in.

…especially before setting sail on this Next Adventure.

Coming home…

Re-settling always takes a few days.

BUT - I was able to come home to my network of “friends”.

What feels like a Community.

A Community of Good & Smart people.

It’s HARD to believe.

It’s the end of May.

The days are LONGER and you can FEEL it.

• More energy.

• More focus.

• More time.

Going into the week.. I had a laundry list of things I wanted to get done.

…and they were ALL IMPORTANT 🙄

My mom sat me down (virtually) and said “Jonny, what are your priorities?”

I said “Ma, get off my back!”

I’m kidding I didn’t say that…

I love my mom. ❤️

But... I was annoyed at first.

I’m an ADULT for fuck’s sake.

PATHETIC.

But…

After I got off the call…

I was SUPER CLEAR on what I needed to focus on for the week.

I can’t imagine NOT spending as much time as I did on those TOP 3 Priorities.

They would’ve been done in a shitty way… or NOT done at all.

Prioritization is a Game Changer.

What are your priorities?

Cut that list down to 3 for next week.

…and see what happens.

What a week!

…back in the saddle.

I was hating myself at the beginning of the week.

Like, “what’s up with this guy?”

He can’t do shit.

He can barely use a fork.

I wasn’t even tired.

I just came back from a trip… 🇬🇧

It was a week. No biggie.

But I got off track.

I had a great rhythm going in...

But did virtually no work on the trip.

When I got back.. it’s like I had Amnesia.

Who are you again?

Finally.

Halfway through the week - I was slammed with calls & meetings.

It brought me back.

Resurrected.

Or really - PEOPLE brought me back.

Being ACCOUNTABLE to them - brought me back.

Is there something you want to do? or start?...but haven’t been able to?

Be accountable to someone.

Do a free case study (Client) or find someone to work on a project with (Partner).

Great to be back.

Got here last Saturday.

Leaving tomorrow.

That was fast!

What an amazing place.

The Vibe.

I remember the last time I was here.

I was in my 20’s.

Backpacking through Europe.

I couldn’t wait to comeback!

I said to myself ‘I’ll come back to Europe every year!’ 🙄

Fast Forward 20 years later…

Time. Flies. By.

When I was in my 20’s I just wanted to explore, meet people and party!

Today.

I just want my mom to have a good time with our family.

We’re HERE for her.

To celebrate her 80th.

…and eat some Fish & Chips! 😉

I’m a Big Fan of all things Great Britain.

Last week… I made my first REAL post on Linkedin.

I talk a BIG Game.

I tell OTHERS to Post.

But…

Finally. I did it.

…and it was great!

I’ve always found LinkedIn to be kinda painful.

Boring self-promo content etc…

But recently I’ve found good content on there.

…and more importantly, really good people.

Why Post Now?

1. I’m clear on what I want to offer the world.

2. I’m confident writing publicly (because of this newsletter).

That’s what IT TOOK.

That’s what it can take FOR YOU.

NOT 44 weeks of writing a Newsletter.

But doing something consistently until you find your voice.

Doesn’t have to be content, can be anything.

Anything your soul keeps telling you to do.

Start small.

Get Creative.

Have fun.

This week is the Jewish Holiday of Passover.

“Passover (Pesach) commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.”

We repeat the story every year at the dinner table (Seder).

The Jewish Holidays for me is a reason to migrate back to Ottawa (hometown) and message a lot of old friends.

A lot of people I grew up with also end up migrating back for the holidays.. and in general, people are in touch. (Jews & Non-Jews)

Before this week I felt like a hamster on a wheel.

Same thoughts. Same habits. No progress.

Re-connecting with old friends also led to re-connecting with my old self.

I didn’t expect that.

It was great.

I also realized - the grass ‘ain’t greener on the other side.

Everyone’s dealing with shit.

Just different piles. 💩

BUT - Just one conversation with an old friend can give you that unexpected reboot.

The one you didn’t think you needed.

Re-connect.

See what happens.
